Simple Justice was established in 2004 to help persons at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid to get access to justice. Over the past 8 years it has assisted more than 7 000 South Africans and foreigners/refugees to protect and promote their dignity. I realized then that access to justice through legal practitioners were mostly out of the reach of South Africans and the many refugees in the Cape, and have tried to work with other legal practitioners and professionals to provide affordable, and sometimes free, assistance to ordinary people at the bottom of the pyramid.
I believe very firmly that access to justice is one of the fundamental requirements for sustainable democracy. It is only when ordinary persons can see and experience that justice is accessible and can help them to protect their most fundamental human right – the right to dignity – that democracy is safe and stable.
Simple Justice is now a registered non profit organization (reg no: 081/794/npo). We have never received any outside financial support over the past 8 years, but will in future use our long track record and the testimonials from some of our 7 000 clients, to mobilise funds from those persons, institutions and businesses with disposable wealth to build a trust fund to enable simple justice to contract legal practitioners and to fund a stronger infrastructure for more extensive services.
